Things We Love: One Shot Coffee

If you live, work, or play in Northern Liberties, chances are, you’ve heard of or frequently visit One Shot Coffee, located at 217 W. George Street, run by wife and wife team Melissa and Rebecca Baruno.

A Brooklyn, NY native, Melissa dreamed of opening her own coffee shop after working at cafes in Connecticut and New York. While working in an accounting office, she began to search for possible locations up and down the East Coast. She saw a listing on Craigslist for a space in Liberties Walk, jumped on it, and relocated to Philly.

She brought a little bit of Brooklyn with her, proudly serving up Stumptown Coffee (roasted in Red Hook, Brooklyn), but embracing what Philly had to offer, as well: “People here are very dedicated to the things they love, which makes for very dedicated customers,” explains Melissa. “Philly is also the land of opportunity right now. You can come here, open a business, buy a house, and be a part of a community.”

Melissa met her wife, Rebecca, on the Moshulu during a (yes, you guessed it) Big Gay Boat Party. The two had one date, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Now, the pair works together to continue the success of One Shot – and while working together has its advantages, it can also get challenging at times, the couple explains: “We have had to set rules about not talking about work when we’re home, and sometimes the conversation does slip in. But in the end, we are a strong team together, and this business counts on the both of us to work together.”

One Shot recently rolled out their fall menu, which features items like Baked Eggs, cooked in a wide-mouth mason jar with tomato sauce, a touch of cream, Parmesan, spinach, and topped with Merguez sausage and a French Baguette (drool), and a Fall Quinoa Salad with roasted beets, apples, onions, cauliflower, and sweet potatoes (pictured right).

And the best part? One lucky reader has a chance to win a $25 gift card to One Shot! Perfect for you to take a date or a book or your dog and relax in the beautifully designed two-story cafe. I love One Shot for its variety of delicious offerings. Every time we visit there is always something new to try. I love the changing burrito specials, but my favorite dish is the Jailbreaker. I also love all the different creative drink specials, from Thai Iced tea to Nutella Mochas. Last weekend we were happy to partake of the Girl Scout cookie themed drinks – I had the Tagalong and my boyfriend had the Thin Mint. Yum! Keep up the good work, ladies!
